What is the difference between on-rim and off-rim changeovers?

On-rim means each set of tires is mounted on its own set of wheels, so the changeover is a wheel swap. Off-rim means one set of wheels is shared, so the tires must be dismounted, the seasonal set mounted, and the wheels balanced before installation.

How long does a changeover take?

An on-rim changeover takes about 30 minutes per vehicle. An off-rim changeover, including mounting and balancing, takes about two hours per vehicle.

Do you work in apartment and condo parking garages?

Yes — we regularly do changeovers in underground and above-ground parking garages, as long as there is room to work safely around the vehicle and the building allows service vehicles.

When should I book my winter changeover?

When daytime temperatures are consistently below 7°C, usually late October into November in the GTA. Earlier is better: after the first snow forecast, every tire shop in the region — mobile or not — books up fast.

There are two kinds of changeover. If your winter and summer tires are each mounted on their own set of rims, that is an on-rim changeover — a straight swap, torqued to spec and pressure-checked. If both sets share one set of rims, that is an off-rim changeover: the tires come off the rims, the other set goes on, and everything gets mounted and balanced before it goes back on the vehicle. Either way, the work happens at your place, on your schedule.

How We Do It

Every changeover finishes the way a proper shop job should: wheels torqued to the manufacturer's specification with a calibrated torque wrench — never just an impact gun and a guess — tire pressures set to the door-jamb placard, and a visual check of tread, sidewalls, and valve stems so small problems get flagged before they become roadside problems. If your vehicle has a TPMS system, we make sure it reads correctly before we leave.

Multi-vehicle households are where mobile changeovers really pay off. The first vehicle is at the standard rate and each additional vehicle at the same visit drops to the additional-vehicle price, so a two- or three-car driveway gets done in one appointment, one trip, and one bill — no repeat visits to a shop across three weekends.

Good To Know

Not sure whether your tires are on rims? If your winter tires have their own steel or alloy wheels, they are on-rim. If you only own one set of wheels and the tires themselves get swapped, that is off-rim. A quick look in the garage — or a photo sent when you book — settles it in seconds.

Timing matters more than the calendar date. The working rule in Ontario is to swap when temperatures sit consistently below 7°C in the fall, and back again once spring is reliably above it. Winter compound goes hard and wears fast in warm weather; summer and all-season compound goes stiff and loses grip in the cold. Booking a week or two ahead of the rush beats fighting for a slot after the first snowfall warning.
